Cape Coral and the Area

Cape Coral's tropical waterfront wonderland, also known as the Venice of America, glimmers with 400 miles (approx. 650 km) of fresh and salt water canals and is the best place to relax, to do sports or to learn about "The Real Florida".

Cape Coral is located in Lee County, Florida,and the largest city in Southwest Florida. There are over 400 miles - 640 km – Waterways. In Cape Coral are more miles of canals than anywhere else in the world. Most of the canals are navigable and a lot of them have access to the Gulf of Mexico. As the city has a total area of 120 square miles (310.8 km2), in terms of area it is the second largest city in Florida (Jacksonville is the largest one), and the twelfth largest city in population. It was estimated that Cape Coral had in 2009 a population of around 163,000. The population for the area of Cape Coral and the neighbor city Fort Myers was estimated 646,000 for 2009. The median age was 42.7 years.

Cape Coral is a large peninsula, cradled in the south and east between Caloosahatchee River - belonging of the Intracoastal Waterway - and in the west by Matlacha Pass which is part of the Gulf of Mexico. Cape Coral is sheltered by a string of Florida’s barrier islands. Fort Myers is located across the Caloosahatchee River to the south. There is also the closest international airport, RSW Southwest Florida International Airport – just about 30 minutes from Cape Coral. The closest highway I 75 passes within 10 miles of the city of Cape Coral. The Interstate 75 connects northward to Tampa (and further on to the midwestern states) and southeastward to Fort Lauderdale and Miami.

Cape Coral is an entirely master-planned communitiy and one of the largest in the USA. Cape Coral was founded in 1957 and incorporated in 1970. Cape Coral is located on the Gulf of Mexico. The city Cape Coral was designed to be a “water wonderland” between Tampa and Miami.

Recreation / Activities / Nature

Cape Coral and the area of Fort Myers offers a wide range of recreational opportunities. There are 7 golf courses in Cape Coral only and several more in the area. In the entire area you find top rated championship courses which provide players of all skill levels with a pleasurable and challenging round of golf and also more relaxed "executive" courses.

There is a popular waterpark for kids and adults called Sun Splash Family Waterpark. Cape Coral features its own sandy beach and fishing pier on the Caloosahatchee River at the public Yacht Basin & Club. The Yacht Club Pier is also the place of a weekly Sunset Celebration.

The famous islands Sanibel and Captiva Island with excellent shelling beaches, stretch along the Gulf Coast directly in front of Cape Coral. You can reach them by boat and by car. For boaters the entire area is a paradise. Prestine beaches can be reached and there a some that you can compare with beaches in the Caribbean.

Several parks and ecological preserves allow observation of the local wildlife. Elevated nature trails wind through the mangroves at Four Mile Cove Ecological Preserve. A must see is The J. N. "Ding" Darling National Wildlife Refuge, which is located on the subtropical barrier island of Sanibel in the Gulf of Mexico. It is part of the largest undeveloped mangrove ecosystem in the United States. The J. N. "Ding" Darling National Wildlife Refuge is world famous for its spectacular migratory bird populations. If you are lucky you see white Pelicans - especially during the winter time there are huge swarms of them to watch in this refuge. The area around Cape Coral is home to dolphins, endangered or threatened species as there are manatees, gopher tortoises, pelicans and a lot of other water birds like roseated spoonbills and American bald eagles, which is the national bird.

Cape Coral is home to the largest population of burrowing owls in the state of Florida.
